As most of you probably know myself and Alan are busy planning our wedding in Rome this Summer. I have been to a few destination weddings both in Italy and Spain and have to say, I love them! Everyone is so relaxed, the sun is shining (hopefully) and the celebration usually extends over a few days allowing you to spend time with friends and family you normally mightn’t get the chance to do so with.
I love seeing real destination wedding for inspiration and getting advice from brides who have planned their own destination weddings. So I thought it would be great if there was a dedicated space where fellow brides planning their dream destination weddings could come to find inspiration and advice and so, flyawaybride.com was born…
I was thrilled to launch Fly Away Bride on February 14th, yes Valentines day, and the feedback and reaction for everyone has been great! Fly Away Bride will feature only the most unique and gorgeous destination wedding related content, brilliantly talented vendors, real weddings full of style and great ideas and of course my personal experiences while planning my own wedding in Rome!
I hope you enjoy the blog x
Last year I had the pleasure of designing and letterpress printing Anri and Anthony’s destination wedding stationery for their 10.10.10 wedding. They chose our Fly Away wedding suite which we customised for their French inspired wedding in South Africa. Anri and Anthony both met and live in London but chose to host their very chic wedding in South Africa where Anri grew up.
The French inspiration came from their love of France, “it’s intoxicating.. Anthony has a beautiful little maison on the river in Limoges where we spent six months in the summer. I got to love the French countryside and its people as much as the bustling city life in Paris and it was easy to draw inspiration from this.” Using this inspiration they wanted to add that certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ to the style of their wedding stationery and throughout their wedding…
I was delighted to design and print save the date cards, invitations, RSVP postcards, menus, seating tags, gift boxes and thank you cards all inspired by vintage luggage tags, guide books and travel stamps.
“We wanted to thank you very much for the exceptional stationery you have produced for our wedding. It has been an absolute delight dealing with you and we are so pleased with the exquisite set which you have designed. It perfectly reflects all that is elegant and you have made for a fantastic experience and a very happy bride and groom! Our sincerest thanks.”
Anri & Anthony
I have to say when Anri sent me the images from their wedding they really took my breath away, she is a stunningly beautiful bride and their wedding is so gorgeous! You can see their full wedding and an interview with Anri featured on Fly Away Bride.
It really was a pleasure to work with Anri and Anthony on their wedding stationery. Thank you for sharing your photographs with us, I wish you only the best for your future together as husband and wife!
Fancy some light relief from wedding planning, how about a girls night out starting with Bridemaids…

From the producer of Superbad, Knocked Up and the 40 Year Old Virgin, Bridesmaids is about the ups, downs, trials and tribulations of being a bridesmaid! Unfortunately it won’t be out until May. Save the date!
Check out the Bridesmaids Movie Trailer
The trailer got me thinking about the vast amount of wedding related films, the good, the bad and the brilliant. So what’s your favourite wedding related film: The Hangover, Muriel’s Wedding, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Gone with the Wind, 27 Dresses, Father of the Bride (the original 1950’s film), Wedding Crashers, and the list goes on and on..?
What about including your favourite wedding movie in your hen party plans, a private screening for you and your girls followed by a night on the town, or a wedding movie marathon the day after the night before?
Well they’ve been a while coming, the hardest customer to please is yourself, but myself and Alan finally sent out our wedding invitations. I designed the bespoke wedding stationery suite to set the tone for our Rome wedding this summer. Inspired by the romance and elegance of 1900’s to 19020’s style the Art Nouveau design features curved forms flowing from a stylised butterfly…
We chose to send our guests a flat invitation, a wedding booklet and and RSVP card. We wanted to use a muted subtle colour palette to create a romantic vintage feel and printed our stationery with a pewter ink and also blind embossed (printed with no ink). I selected an organic curvaceous striking font for our names which was contrasted with a sans serif minimal font.
I went searching for a stamp that would compliment our stationery suite, the An Post Wedding Stamp or 2010 just didn’t suit at all, so I looked through their website and came across their Stamp Issues section. As soon as I saw the Czeslaw Slania I knew it was perfect. The stamp depicts a scene from the ballet Romeo and Juliet, how fitting, and the colours of the etching were perfect!
We wanted to provide our guests with all the information they would need to book their flights, accommodation and to plan their trip to Rome. We included in the wedding booklet a map of Rome, information about our favourite sights, restaurants, cafes and bars. We wanted to share our love for Rome with our guests giving them a sense of why we chose Rome as our wedding destination.
It really is true once you’ve sent out your wedding invitations, everything does become very real, and very exciting!
We’ve had lots of great feedback from our guests complementing our wedding invitations, I can truly say that they have set the perfect first impression for our wedding.
An Post have just released the Wedding Stamp Edition for 2011…
“The stamp features a classic black and white photographic image of a newly married couple, in a loving embrace and sheltering under a shared umbrella.”
A big change from last years very colourful illustrated lovebirds stamp. What are your thoughts do you prefer this years edition?
If this years wedding stamp is not for you, why not consider choosing from the collection of special edition stamps available from An Post. Myself and Alan chose the Czeslaw Slania Commemorative Stamp, we felt the beautiful etching depicting a scene from the ballet Romeo and Juliet fit the style and tone of our wedding and stationery perfectly.
An Post’s Stamp Issues include everything from Fauna & Flora,Birds of Prey and Wild Flowers of Ireland to Ireland Series of High Crosses and Legendary Showbands…

Who lived a more decadent life than Marie Antoinette! Pure indulgence is at the centre of this inspiring wedding style…
Create a sense of romance and style with over the top opulence. Think ornate with candelabras, feathers and cameos and use a candy pastel colour palette coupled with gold and pewter metallics. Serve macaroons and deliciously indulgent treats. Full bridal gowns and period boot shoes are perfect for this style and hand painted fans and masks only add to the drama. Set the tone for your decadent wedding with our Cameo Wedding Stationery Suite.
Following on from our 2011 Wedding Styles & Trends post I have decided to dedicate a full feature to dessert tables, I couldn’t resist…
2010 saw the emergence of sweet or candy stations, for 2011 the top wedding food trend is dessert buffets. If you’re looking for a focal point to get all your guests talking this is definitely for you. Your dessert table can reflect the style of your wedding, is it rustic, minimal or classic. Choose a centre point on the table to place your wedding cake and surrounded it with delicious treats. From cupcakes to french fancies and doughnuts to macaroons offer your favourite desserts.
Whatever you choose to indulge in, make sure everything on your table is easy to access and don’t forget to label everything to. Consider backdrops and table cloth patterns and colours, dishes and cake stands, dessert tables can make a huge impression on your reception decor. Cover the table in lace, ribbon or surround your cakes with a sea of flowers. Consider the colours of the desserts and compliment your wedding pallet with coloured icing, fruits and toppings. Add decor to the table using bottles, candles or old picture frames for a vintage look or for a very “French” look display your treats on an old distressed dresser. For a a relaxed picnic look lay down chequered blankets over a picnic table and tier the desserts using old bottle crates. The possibilities are endless. Delicious!
Baby’s Breath; delicate, understated and beautiful!
